Re: Exploring Collaboration Between AI Agent Protocol CG and WebAgents CG

Glad to help – that table was all GPT-generated 😊 I just asked the question.

I would appreciate if the community had a chance to review and provide input/comments on this example in the ODRL community around authorisation/entitlement access in a delegation scenario:

https://github.com/w3c/odrl/issues/112

This is a step “after authentication” (assume OIDC/VC or some other mechanism validated that the user/agent/admin are who they should be).

Regards,

Dear all,

@Joshua: thanks for sharing the comparison table — great! We used your proposal in yesterday's meeting to build a discussion, and we will include a similar table in Section 2 of the Interoperability TF report [1]. The criteria and the table will likely evolve as the report evolves. I will return with more details on the report and the next steps towards the end of the week.

@Gaowei: thanks for launching the discussion. We discussed the positioning of the two CGs in our regular meeting yesterday.

Our consensus was that the CGs seem to overlap in terms of content, but take different roles:

- the role of the WebAgents CG (and especially the Interoperability TF) is to observe the landscape, so we do not focus on developing specific protocols (at least not at this point); instead, we survey the body of research, emerging technologies, and existing work to identify guidelines, requirements, and standardization gaps; the Agent Network Protocol falls within the scope of our survey; the results could provide input to groups producing specifications

- the AI Agent Protocol CG seems more focused on producing specifications for one or more protocols

What seems important is to coordinate the two CGs closely. One very pragmatic issue discussed yesterday is that we are already coordinating with several groups (WoT CG/IG/WG, Solid CG, LWS WG) and we are lacking the bandwidth to ensure good coordination with all these groups. So, it would be a great help if a representative of the AI Agent Protocol CG could join our regular meetings to support the coordination.

Gaowei, let us know how this sounds and if we can support the initiative of the AI Agent Protocol CG in any way.

Best wishes,

Andrei

I would suggest that someone build a table of the scope of these efforts and others, a quick search already shows a “busy” space, and it is hard for a solution builder to choose an approach or promote a standard.

Dear WebAgents Community Members,

Hello!

My name is Gaowei Chang, and I’m one of the co-chairs of the newly formed AI Agent Protocol Community Group at W3C, alongside Song Xu. I am also the initiator of the open-source Agent Network Protocol (ANP). A few months ago, I had the opportunity to present ANP to the WebAgents CG — thank you again for the warm reception at that time.

Our new CG is focused on the design and standardization of protocols between AI agents. The goal is to develop secure, interoperable, and scalable mechanisms to support agent communication and collaboration on the Web — particularly as intelligent agents become first-class participants in Web ecosystems.

While our focus areas may differ slightly, we see a lot of synergy between our two groups. Topics such as agent discovery, identity, interaction protocols, and metadata modeling are highly relevant to both communities.

We would love to explore avenues for collaboration, to avoid duplication and ensure that the Web benefits from a harmonized approach to agent interoperability. We welcome any opportunity to coordinate and exchange ideas with the WebAgents CG, and we’re open to participating in joint discussions or sessions.

Looking forward to connecting soon!

Best regards,

Gaowei Chang
