Expecting "encyclop�dia" and "encyclopaedia" to match seems more likely. Note, for instance, that german "Schoss" and german "Scho�" refer to rather different concepts. And if you consider non-nouns there other plenty of examples where words differing only in the capitalisation of the first letter mean different things.
